Passivity-based sliding mode control for a polytopic stochastic differential inclusion system

Passivity-based sliding mode control for a polytopic stochastic differential inclusion (PSDI) system is considered. A control law is designed such that the reachability of sliding motion is guaranteed. Moreover, sufficient conditions for mean square asymptotic stability and passivity of sliding mode dynamics are obtained by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.     

Incorporation of EGCG into an etch-and-rinse adhesive system: mechanical properties and bond strength to caries affected dentin

This study evaluated how a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor (EGCG) incorporated into an etch-and-rinse adhesive system (AS) affects the long-term microtensile bond strength (MTBS) to caries affected dentin (CAD) and flexural strength (FS) of AS. Forty CAD surfaces received acid conditioning and were randomly divided into four groups (n?=?10): EGCG-PRE – dentin treatment with 200?μg/mL EGCG solution; EGCG-INC – 200?μg/mL EGCG solution incorporated into SA; CHX-PRE – dentin treatment with 2% digluconate solution; NT – no treatment. The AS (Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE) was applied and resin composite blocks were built on the dentin. Beam-shaped specimens (0.8?mm²) were obtained submitted to MTBS testing following 24?h, 6 months or 1 year of water storage (WS). Adhesive interface was analyzed by SEM. FS testing was performed by preparing specimens with the adhesive system, with or without the EGCG solution (200?μg/mL) (n?=?10). Tests were carried out in a universal machine (0.5?mm/min). MTBS data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test, whereas FS data, to the Student’s t-test (α?=?0.05). MTBS values were not affected by EGCG application, either incorporated or used as a dentin treatment agent, regardless of the WS period; however, CHX negatively affected MTBS to CAD (p?<?0.001). WS significantly reduced MTBS values (p?<?0.001) from the 6-months time point. FS was not affected by EGCG incorporation into the SA (p?=?0.2527). EGCG incorporation into AS was unable to maintain bond stability to CAD over time, whereas it did not compromise adhesive’s property.

Multilevel preconditioning of graph-Laplacians: Polynomial approximation of the pivot blocks inverses

We consider the discrete system resulting from mixed finite element approximation of a second-order elliptic boundary value problem with Crouzeix–Raviart non-conforming elements for the vector valued unknown function and piece-wise constants for the scalar valued unknown function. Since the mass matrix corresponding to the vector valued variables is diagonal, these unknowns can be eliminated exactly. Thus, the problem of designing an efficient algorithm for the solution of the resulting algebraic system is reduced to one of constructing an efficient algorithm for a system whose matrix is a graph-Laplacian (or weighted graph-Laplacian).     

A synthesis method for multicomponent distillation sequences with fewer columns

An easy‐to‐use matrix‐based method for the systematic synthesis of distillation configurations using less than n‐1 columns to separate any zeotropic n‐component feed into n product streams is described. The method is easily extended to obtain additional thermally coupled configurations. The only information needed to generate the configurations is the number of components in the feed, or equivalently, the number of distinct composition final product streams. We have successfully enumerated configurations for feeds containing up to eight components. This has resulted in a large number of hitherto unknown configurations even for four‐component separations. Some of the novel configurations generated using the method have substantially lower heat duty than the previously known fewer column configurations for a four‐component feed separation. Therefore, it is essential to include these novel configurations in the search space to find the optimal distillation configuration with fewer columns for a given application. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 2479–2494, 2012     

Chemical Biology for Understanding Matrix Metalloproteinase Function

The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family has long been associated with normal physiological processes such as embryonic implantation, tissue remodeling, organ development, and wound healing, as well as multiple aspects of cancer initiation and progression, osteoarthritis, inflammatory and vascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. The development of chemically designed MMP probes has advanced our understanding of the roles of MMPs in disease in addition to shedding considerable light on the mechanisms of MMP action. The first generation of protease‐activated agents has demonstrated proof of principle as well as providing impetus for in vivo applications. One common problem has been a lack of agent stability at nontargeted tissues and organs due to activation by multiple proteases. The present review considers how chemical biology has impacted the progress made in understanding the roles of MMPs in disease and the basic mechanisms of MMP action.

A new equivalent circuit for inverters and its application for the determination of coupling matrix elements of narrow RF bandpass filters

A new equivalent circuit for inverters is presented. Using this circuit, expression for the elements of the coupling matrix of narrow RF band pass filters is derived. The derivation is based on frequency independent coupling assumed in the synthesis of narrow RF band pass filters. Our expression is different from an earlier expression obtained using lumped circuit representations of different types of coupling and their analysis. It is shown that the earlier expression can be derived from our analysis if the coupling is assumed frequency‐variant. Unlike earlier work, our derivation shows how the sign of the coupling coefficient can be obtained. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2010.
